FAQ | Will there be a lapse in coverage if I switch?

Hi, I’m Tom Gaumond with G2 Insurance Services. Welcome to our FAQ series, where we answer some of the most common questions people have about working with an independent insurance agency.

One concern we hear from clients is: If I switch insurance companies, will there be a lapse in my coverage?

The answer is no. When handled properly, there should never be a lapse in coverage when changing insurance carriers.

Insurance policies are designed to start and end on specific dates and times. In most cases, a new policy begins at 12:01 a.m. on the effective date listed on the policy. When switching carriers, your existing policy should be canceled on that same date, ensuring a seamless transition from one company to another.

Many people worry that changing insurance companies could leave them unprotected for a period of time. However, one of the responsibilities of a knowledgeable insurance agent is to coordinate the timing of your policies so there are no gaps in coverage and no unexpected surprises.

Another common misconception is that you can only switch insurance companies when your policy renews. In reality, you can change carriers at almost any time during your policy term. Whether your renewal is approaching or you’re halfway through your current policy period, it’s possible to compare options, secure new coverage, and coordinate the transition without creating a lapse.

At G2 Insurance Services, we help manage the process from start to finish, making sure your coverage remains continuous while helping you find the policy that best fits your needs.
